Providence Activities Assistant in Valdez, Alaska
Providence is calling an Activities Assistant (LTC Activites, Variable, 0.0 FTE) to Providence Valdez Medical Center in Valdez, Alaska. In this position you will:
HEALTH ORIENTED PROGRAMMING: Provide sensory stimulation activities for the residents with cognitive or sensory deficits. Plan and participate in creative arts activities in both group and one on one settings. Provide reality orientation and validation therapy in dealing with dementia and Alzheimer residents.
SAFETY AND INFECTION CONTROL: Maintain and clean activity areas which includes the kitchen, day room and exercise room. Maintain proper hygiene for all cooking and dining activities. Assist the residents in caring for animals and plants to ensure no health or safety hazards. Alert to questions, hostile and combative behavior, and medical emergencies and requests assistance as needed. Respond in a fire or emergency situation, performing the role assigned appropriately.
PROMOTING PARTICIPATION: Provide least intrusive cueing to participating residents and encourages other staff to assist as well with modeling and verbal instruction. Personally encourage residents to participate as necessary.
PLANNING: Prepare and post a monthly schedule of events. Maintain petty cash log for expenditures. Purchase necessary equipment for activities by using the current policy and procedure. Prepare and facilitate each activity, and cleans the area afterward. Provide necessary equipment and instructions for other staff to facilitate activities. Ensure documentation is complete for participation of residents in any activity.
SELF IMPROVEMENT: Attend mandatory inservices required of all facility employees annually as well as 20 hours of CE’s to obtain and maintain Activity Assistant Certification.
RESIDENTS RIGHTS: Maintain confidentiality of all resident medical and personal information or resident/facility financial information obtained while performing the duties of this job to anyone who does not have authorized access to such information.

Required qualifications for this position include:
High school diploma or GED
Certification as an Activity Assistant with National Certification Council for Activity Professionals required within 2 years of hire
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
2 years of college
1 year experience as a health care provider in a health care facility
6 months as an activity therapy assistant
About the Providence Valdez Medical Center
Providence Valdez Medical Center is a 21 bed Critical Access Hospital and we employ about 100 people (87 FTE’s). Of those 21 beds, 10 are licensed Long Term Care beds and 11 are Acute/Swing Beds. We have four physicians on our active medical staff who practice out of the Valdez Medical Clinic. Our average daily census is three-four inpatients and 20-30 outpatients. Our facility contains an emergency room, labor room, post-partum, nursery, cardiac room, orthopedic, and med/surg rooms. We also have an operating room for emergency surgeries and elective procedures, C-sections, hernias and appendectomies. All our beds are licensed for “swing bed” status of which 1-3 are usually occupied.
