Providence Manager - Nutrition and Food Services in Kodiak, Alaska


Providence is calling a Manager - Nutrition and Food Services (Nutrition Counseling, Day Shift, 1.0 FTE) to Providence Kodiak Medical Center in Kodiak, Alaska. In this position you will:

  • STANDARDS: Ensures that medical nutrition therapy and lactation support is evidence-based practice in accordance with American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, American Dietetic Association, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Cancer Society, United States Department of Agriculture, and Food and Drug Administration guidelines, International Lactation Consultant Association and Joint Commission standards. Develops and reviews Clinical Nutrition Services policies and procedures. Designs and evaluates menus and selects and maintains nutrition education materials. Remains current with updated standards of medical nutrition care.

  • LEADERSHIP: Builds trust, develops, coaches and trains staff to work as a team. Provides guidance for staff through clear and consistent communication. Encourages staff to use their talents to achieve desired outcomes. Participates in personnel functions including hiring, evaluations, disciplinary actions and terminations. Appropriately credits team members for the effort and accomplishment of desired outcomes.

  • PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Establishes work priorities, determines appropriate procedures from established standards. Makes decisions affecting the operations budget in a manner that produces cost effective results. Routinely reviews the performance of nutrition services staff against key indicators, takes action when necessary to improve outcomes. Reviews hour worked and schedules for staff. Makes decisions affecting the operations budget in a manner that produces cost effective results.

  • DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING: Plans and implements formal and informal staff in-service sessions in a manner which provides learning and education opportunities for staff members. Supports the ongoing staff competency and evaluation processes. Develops the screening criteria to be used by nurses for identifying patient's nutrition risk. Responsible for nutrition education when medical nutrition therapy is an integral part of overall medical care.

  • LONG-TERM CARE SERVICES: Develops and updates individual nutrition assessments and care plans for each long-term care resident annually and quarterly. Completes documentation in nursing progress notes as needed related to changes, interventions or nutrition-related concerns such as lab results, decubiti, and hydration. Assists and coordinates nutrition related issues with ancillary departments.

  • ACUTE CARE SERVICES: Performs nutrition assessment and develops nutrition care plan for all acute patients with identified nutrition risk. Develops individual meal plans as required. Provides nutrition education to patients, follows-up as required, and makes appropriate referrals.

  • May asses the lactation support needs of obstetrical patients and newborns, based on delivery circumstances, feeding and growth indicators, and input from patient and other health care professionals. Provides individualized lactation support to optimize patient breastfeeding goals. Acts as an advocate for breastfeeding and lactation consultant to medical staff as requested.

  • DOCUMENTATION: Monitors nutrition services operations to ensure that accurate records and documentation are maintained and completed. Accurately records care plan in the medical record using accepted charting formats, computerized system, and forms. Responsible for communication of nutrition recommendations, plans, and needs to all members of the health care team. Documents ongoing follow-up of nutritional care plan and additional interventions instituted. Provides physicians with documentation of services rendered for outpatient referrals. Registers outpatients to receive services.

  • CONSULTATION: Consults with patients and physicians, nursing staff, therapists, pharmacists, coworkers, and other members of the patient care team, keeping them informed of patient's nutritional progress. Offers counseling and education to patient/family in the application of medical nutrition therapy principles that will be integral to patient's long term recovery and health.

  • SAFETY: Monitors nutrition services staff to assure food safety and sanitation procedures including the HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) principles are followed correctly. Makes frequent inspections of all work, storage and serving areas to determine that food safety regulations and directions governing dietetic activities are followed. Inspects the physical condition of the equipment and ensures that maintenance repairs are done in a timely manner. Maintains appropriate documentation. Attends safety meetings as required and shares information with staff.

  • COMMUNICATION: Strong communication skills critical to managing interactions with a wide variety of people from differing literacy levels, languages, and cultures. Written skills necessary for documentation in the medical record, as well as providing written information for home use.

  • Implement care/services that recognize age/diversity specific needs/issues of customers served.

  • Completes Competency Plan for assigned job and department.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food and Nutrition or related field and Completion of a dietetic internship program.

  • Continuing education in accordance with policies determined by the American Dietetic Association for maintenance of registered status

  • Current certification as Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration for the American Dietetic Association

  • Licensure in accordance with the laws of the State of Alaska

  • 2 years previous experience leading projects and/or people

  • 2 years experience in the food industry

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE)

Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center (PKIMC) provides comprehensive health care to residents and visitors of Kodiak Island. This critical access hospital features 25 acute care beds, including four birthing suites, one OB triage room, and two ICU beds. In addition, the Elder House, PKIMC’s long term care facility, has 22 beds.

PKIMC provides an extensive array of inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency department, surgery, laboratory services, maternity, general medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, sleep studies, specialty clinics, diagnostic imaging services and pharmacy and is staffed by a mix of primary care physicians, surgeons and specialists who provide family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics, radiology and general practice.
