Providence Laboratory Assistant II in Anchorage, Alaska
Providence is calling a Laboratory Assistant II (Anatomic Pathology, Variable Shift, 0.5 FTE) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position, you will:
PROCESSING AND SPECIMEN HANDLING: Measures, aliquots, and prepares specimens for testing. Receives specimens into the department and verifies specimen integrity. Troubleshoots / researches physician orders to ensure accurate order entry of procedures requested.
Performs laboratory assistant duties in one or more of the following areas:
Sendouts: Creates packing list, package and ship samples to specified reference laboratory. Investigates collection and stability requirements of samples that will be shipped. Maintains and orders shipping supplies for Sendout department.
Microbiology: Inoculates specimens to appropriate media and slides using BSL 2 practices. Performs rapid testing, susceptibility setup, and quality control procedures. Performs inventory for the microbiology laboratory.
Pathology: Performs functions in support of the Cytotechnologist, Histotechnologist, Pathologist and Pathology Assistant (PA). These would include accessioning and labeling of cytology and surgical specimens into the LIS/HIS in accordance with established policies and procedures. Assists PA and pathologist during gross dissection, cuts, stains frozen section slides and labels tissue requisitions and cassettes accurately according to established policies and procedures. Inventories and submits timely request for replenishment accordingly. Disposes of biohazard tissue specimens within Federal/State an OSHA regulations.
DOCUMENTATION AND DATA ENTRY: Understands and adheres to all compliance related procedures. Accurately accessions physician test requests into LIS. Assures validity of edited test orders and add on testing. Maintain tracking log of where and when samples were shipped. Monitor pending lists and follow up on missing or delayed samples.
CLIENT RELATIONS: Maintains a clean, professional personal appearance. At all times conducts himself/herself in a professional manner as a representative of PAMC. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, clients, and the general public. Cooperates closely with Client Services, other laboratory personnel and Pathologist, as well as other departments within PAMC. Receives incoming calls. Assists callers with patient results, specimen requirements, and other information as able. Directs calls to appropriate staff members.
MAINTENANCE: Assist histologist in maintenance of processors, cryostats, recycler and stainers in the Histology and Gross Pathology sections.
COMMUNICATION AND TEAM WORK: Uses clear and concise verbal and written communication with staff and the public. Builds effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and laboratory customers. Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote lab goals. Assists other personnel as needed without being asked. Completes pay records and personnel forms accurately and correctly. Willing to work alternate shifts and areas as needed by the department.
QUALITY CONTROL / QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: Performs quality control, quality improvement, specimen tracking, and maintenance procedures as required for shift responsibilities. Contributes accurate statistics or information to the Lab Services QI processes as requested. Notifies customers or clients of unacceptable specimens, arranges for recollection. Volunteers for additional responsibility to assist supervisor. Accurately documents follow-up on client complaints in a timely manner. Participates on a Laboratory QI Committee if requested.
SAFETY AND EDUCATION: Complies with all Laboratory and PHSA safety policies and procedures. Adheres to hospital biohazard waste program. Maintains clean, well stocked working area and participates in appropriate CAP training.
PROBLEM SOLVING / CRITICAL THINKING: Uses good judgment and common sense in making decisions. Accepts responsibility for decisions and learns from incorrect judgments. Demonstrates creativity to solve problems within scope of responsibility. Takes the lead in troubleshooting specimen problems for the area. Refer situations deviating from standard protocol to supervisor or charge tech.
PRECEPTOR: Serves as mentor or preceptor for new employees during their orientation period. If delegated, responsible for signing off new employee checklists in coordination with supervisor. Aids supervisor in developing orientation checklists and competencies.
Completes initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department.
Required qualifications for this position include:
H.S. Diploma or GED
Additional education in science, medical coursework, or laboratory training
Computer and customer service skills
2 years Laboratory experience
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- Phlebotomy experience
