Providence Health & Services Clinical Dietitian Specialist - Diabetes Clinic *1.0/Day*Up to $5,000 Hiring Bonus* in Anchorage, Alaska


Providence is calling a Clinical Dietitian Specialist (Diabetes Clinic, Day Shift, 1.0 FTE - 40 hours per week) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position you will:

  • STANDARDS: Ensure that medical nutrition therapy is evidence-based practice in accordance with current standards and as outlined in the Nutrition Care Manual updated semi-annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Develop or assist with review of departmental policies and procedures. Assist with design and evaluation of menus and nutrition education materials. Remains current with updated standards of medical nutrition care through self learning and continuing education programs. Assists with evaluating quality assurance measures and implements changes to assure best practices. Assures technical competence for the specialty by annually reviewing processes, protocols, and assisting in updating competencies

  • PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Establish work priorities to ensure smooth work flow and patient interaction. Screen all patients and determine each patient's nutrition risk. Based upon this initial screen, perform nutrition assessment and develop nutrition plan of care for all patients at moderate or high risk. Responsible for nutrition education when medical nutrition therapy is an integral part of overall medical care. When requested, coordinates team operations to provide quality, efficient clinic services and maximizes comfort and confidentiality for the customer. Anticipates and prioritizes workflow and adjusts work assignments to prevent delays and meet workflow demands

  • DOCUMENTATION: Accurately determine and record a plan of care in the medical record. Responsible for communication of nutrition recommendations, plans, and needs to all members of the health care team. Documents ongoing follow-up of nutritional care plan and additional interventions instituted. Documents productivity by charging patient care related time per departments standards, reports any deviations to the Clinical Nutrition Manager in a timely manner. Gather patient data for clinical studies as needed

  • CONSULTATION: Consult with patients, physicians, nursing staff, therapists, pharmacists, coworkers, and other members of the patient care team keeping them informed of patient's nutritional progress. This process is documented as described above. Provide counseling and education individually tailored to the patient's specific condition and home situation

  • COMMUNICATION: Strong communication skills critical to managing interactions with a wide variety of people from differing literacy levels, languages, and cultures. Written skills necessary for documentation in the medical record, as well as providing written information for home use. Prepare and present in-service training for Food and Nutrition, Nutrition and interdisciplinary staff throughout the service area. Uses independent judgment, effectively recommending and/or taking action related to performance issues and customer complaints and concerns. Problem-solves effectively. Demonstrates professional interpersonal skills in communications with patients and others

  • CONTRACTING: Provide nutritional counseling services required by other community agencies or private institutions as specified in contractual arrangement or as a resource allowing other department programs to succeed

  • OPERATIONS: In collaboration with department manager/supervisor, provides feedback for performance reviews, evaluations, disciplinary process. When assigned acts as department representation at meetings and in committees. Assures department compliance with Joint Commission standards and practices


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree Nutrition or related specialty

  • Current registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Licensure in accordance with the laws of the State of Alaska.

  • 3 years experience in nutrition related specialty

  • Advanced Certification in nutrition related specialty

  • Licensure in accordance with the laws of the State of Alaska

  • BLS Certification within 90 days of hire

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 3 years clinical experience in area of expertise
