Providence Health & Services Clinical Behavioral Health Specialist - Ambulatory- Telehealth in Anchorage, Alaska


Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Clinical Behavioral Health Specialist - Telehealth to our location in Seattle, WA or locations within our Providence footprint in AK, OR, CA, MT, TX and NM, or other Providence remote work approved state locations.

The Behavioral Health Concierge service serves patients in an innovative virtual mental health care program. The Behavioral Health Specialist serves the needs of the whole patient, which will require flexibility and an ability to provide different types and intensity of services. They provide individual and family psychotherapy and counseling via telehealth without restrictions in gender, age, or medical comorbidity; conduct complete biopsychosocial assessments of patients; construct, document, and execute robust treatment plans; provide crisis intervention; clarify mental health diagnosis when needed; serve as a staunch patient advocate and broker access to resources as appropriate (primary care, specialty mental health, social services, housing, financial assistance, etc); educate patients and families; engage in communication with other care team providers; lead group visits when appropriate; use approved tools and metrics to monitor patient progress; and generate billable fee codes when appropriate. They will be responsible for providing screening, brief intervention and/or brief treatment to reduce the use of alcohol and other substances and for supporting behavioral health care for individuals with dual diagnosis. Accurately complete visit documentation in a timely manner using appropriate templates. Accountable for personal behavior and ongoing professional development.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Understands and follows department policies and procedures. Supports standardization process. Establishes and promotes positive working relationships within the department and with leadership. Displays ability to work in an ever-changing environment and participate constructively in change processes.

  • Exhibits and employs strong problem solving and decision making skills. Consistently uses clinical judgment and takes actions appropriate to the client’s situation. Tailor caring processes to the individuality and uniqueness of each client. Engage in effective and caring professional communication and behaviors with colleagues, co-workers, and interdisciplinary teams.

  • Teach and coach clients and their families as well as other healthcare members. Accountability for safe practice, identifying and correcting problems, participating in quality improvement activities and employing evidence-based practice. Remains current with department-based education, performance verification activities, and clinical/ informatics competencies.

  • Utilizes solid judgment and adheres to all policies ensuring the protection of confidential information related to client information according to internal, HIPAA and other regulations. Attends and participates in staff meetings and other meetings as assigned. Accountable for personal behavior and ongoing professional behavior and development.

  • Utilizes motivational interviewing, active listening, critical thinking and clinical knowledge to identify the client’s health risks. Develops appropriate plan of care and engages the client in implementing the plan to promote optimal health and independence. Utilizes approved decision support guidelines appropriately.

  • Communicates effectively using a variety of formats, tools and technologies to build professional relationships and to deliver care. Document all aspects of the client encounter per department standards. Prioritizes individual workload to meet deadlines, fluctuations in call volumes, and rapidly changing priorities. Actively participates in Interdepartmental Committees.

  • Demonstrate skill in communicating effectively with all callers including those in crisis, orienting them to available treatment services, and support options in mental health and chemical dependency in the community. Utilizes the computer in an efficient and effective manner. Participate in continuing education related to software, database and file maintenance and utilize knowledge gained.

  • Manages multiple complex processes related to the client’s county of residence, insurance coverage, and level of care needed, resources available, and urgency of the current situation in order to accurately determine best course of action.

  • Provide mental health and chemical dependency consultation and education to the healthcare team and community agencies. Engage in Telehealth directed training to learn and improve clinical skills as appropriate. Attend monthly staff meetings.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work.

  • Washington state LICSW required, or ability to license in WA prior to starting position.

  • 2 to 3 years years post graduate experience working in mental health, chemical dependency, or co-occurring disorders required.

  • Working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office products, and electronic communication systems required. Minimum 35 wpm keyboarding required. .

  • Requires ability to work independently and collaborate with an off-site team and manager on improving the service.

  • Must be eligible to credential as a provider with EAP and health plan payers

  • Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Electronic Health Record (EPIC), and multiple other computer applications

  • Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Previous experience working in a behavioral health call center preferred.

  • EAP and/or Primary Care experience preferred, prefer CEAP credential.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 1 year experience working with children or adolescents.

  • Experience documenting in an Electronic Health Record (EPIC preferred).
