Providence is calling a Chaplain (Spiritual Care, Days , 1.0 FTE - 40 hours per week) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position you will:

  • MINISTRY WITH PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES:

  • Has professional, inter-personal contact with patients and their families.

  • Assess and address emotional, spiritual, social and psychological needs of patients as part of the multidisciplinary care team.

  • Offer and facilitates appropriate spiritual care and sacramental ministry respectful of patient’s spirituality and faith tradition.

  • Provide special attention and supportive care to terminal and dying patients and their families.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information shared and/or heard.

  • Maintain relationships on professional basis and demonstrates clear boundaries.

  • MINISTRY WITH STAFF:

  • Has professional, inter-personal contact with staff as part of the multidisciplinary care team.

  • Assess emotional and spiritual needs of staff as related to their professional work in the healthcare setting and/or related to their personal lives impacting their work/life balance.

  • Offer and facilitate appropriate spiritual care and sacramental ministry respectful of staff’s spirituality and faith tradition.

  • Provide special attention and supportive care to situations involving the dying process and/or death of a patient.

  • May lead or co-facilitate Critical Incident Stress Defusings and Debriefings.

  • Demonstrate supportive care and neutrality in situations involving workplace conflict.

  • Make referrals to EAP, HR and/or other professionals as appropriate.

  • Maintain confidentiality of staff information shared and/or heard.

  • Maintain relationships on professional basis and demonstrates clear boundaries.

  • COMMUNICATION & EDUCATION:

  • Document assessments, interventions and care plan in patient’s chart at the point of service.

  • Listen to staff and/or physician to identify needs for emotional and/or spiritual support by attending rounds, shift coordinator report, and staff meetings.

  • Attend and participates actively in care conferences.

  • Make appropriate referrals to other member of the multidisciplinary care team.

  • Communicate healthcare information and special concerns verbally to physicians and staff as needed.

  • Bridge and build communications link between patients, families, physicians and staff.

  • Provide information and support with Advance Directives (Living Wills and Medical/Durable Powers of Attorney).

  • Provide support to patients, families, and staff concerning Medical Ethics consultations.

  • Communicate with and collaborates with PAMC spiritual care team, community clergy and/or other spiritual leaders.

  • Articulate role of chaplains and scope of spiritual care within PHS and community.

  • Educate and lead all PAMC staff in assessing and addressing the ‘emotional and spiritual needs’ of patients and their families.

  • Complete initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree (M.Div. and/or M.A.) from an accredited college, seminary, university or theological institute in theology, spirituality, ministry, or closely related field or Any equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience

  • CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) -- 4 Units -- Accredited or approved by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), by programs that were accredited by the former United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Commission on Certification and Accreditation (USCCB/CCA) or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC/ACSS). Equivalency for one unit of CPE (two units in CASC) may be considered.

  • Board Certified or Certifiable within two years by one of these Pastoral Care organizations: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC); National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC); Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).

  • Ordained and endorsed by established ecclesiastical or church authorities and/or religious superiors.

  • A letter from the applicants’ religious authority indicating good standing with his/her faith tradition or denomination (except when in conflict with PHS employment policies).

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Two (2) years clinical and/or pastoral experience in healthcare setting or other ministry
